You can count on a conversation regarding Living in Space and the vision of building a civilization in space. We’ll cover topics such as the hardware necessary for humans to live on-orbit, while also taking a look at the social, cultural, business, legal, and policy elements as well. Finally, every month, we will tackle what’s been termed the hardest problem, the Holy Grail of space: having babies born off-world! What are the medical, ethical, biological, and technological hurdles to overcome?

Dr. Shannon Rupert is an ecologist and educator serving as the director of the Mars Desert Research Station . She has over two decades of experience doing research at Mars Analog sites around the world. Her current research explores the biodiversity found at Mars analog sites.

Egbert Edelbroek, Ph.D. is founder & CEO of SpaceBorn United. This research- and mission design company researches and enables the conditions for human reproduction in space. The research outcomes and missions program provide a crucial contribution for becoming a multi-planetary species. Laura Forczyk is the owner of space consulting firm Astralytical specializing in space science, industry, and policy, offering space career coaching services, and publishing industry reports.
She is the author of Rise of the Space Age Millennials (2020) and Becoming Off-Worldly (2022). She runs the private online community Becoming Off-Worldly Together.
She is the VP of Research and Analytics for the Beyond Earth Institute. She serves as a mentor for the Brooke Owens Fellowship program. She is a NASA Subject Matter Expert for astrophysics and planetary science missions.

James Burk
James Burk is the Executive Director of the Mars Society, the world’s largest space advocacy organization dedicated to sending human explorers to the planet Mars. A former Microsoft engineer and technical project manager, James leads the fundraising and program development activities of the organization. He also leads the Mars Virtual Reality (MarsVR) project which creates immersive experiences using the latest technologies to tell the story of human Mars exploration in a new way. He is based in Seattle, Washington.

Yusuf Cengiz Toklu
Professor Toklu obtained his BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey, and his doctorate from Universite de Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI), Paris, France. His most recent project completed is the production of lunar soil simulants using soil samples from different locations in Turkey. This made Turkey the tenth country in the world in producing lunar soil simulants.

Jin is the Chief Diversity Officer and a member of the Board of Directors for the Mars Society of Canada. He is currently pursuing a Master's of electrical engineering and planetary sciences at the Institute for Earth and Space Exploration at the University of Western Ontario. Kasey Hilton
Previous Crew Commander and Engineer at the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS), a space analog facility that supports Earth-based research for human space exploration. Her areas of speciality are chemistry and space exploration, which were utilized for research and outreach projects including compost feasibility, waste analysis, and a Martian cookbook.

Greg Autry
Dr. Autry served on the 2016 NASA Agency Review Team and as the White House Liaison at NASA in 2017. He was nominated by the president to serve as Chief Financial Officer of NASA in 2020. He chaired the Safety Working Group on the Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee (COMSTAC) at the FAA. He is Vice President of the National Space Society. His writings are frequently published in major news outlets including Foreign Policy, Forbes and Space News. Dr. Autry appears frequently in major media outlets including the BBC, CNN and NPR. He is the author of The New Entrepreneurial Dynamic (Flatworld 2022). He serves on the editorial review boards of: The New Space Journal and The Journal Space Safety Engineering. Dr. Autry holds an MBA and PhD from the University of California, Irvine.

Marc Levesque
Marc was Commander of Crews 216 and 265 at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah in 2019 and 2022. Prior to the missions, he developed training modules to prepare the crews for their two-week simulations of living and working on Mars. During the missions, he focused on managing crew safety, simulation, and station operations, while conducting communications and mapping projects. Marc’s previous space-analog experience involved living and working for a year at the U.S. Antarctic Research Station at South Pole.

Michael Laine
Laine has been involved with Space Elevator research since 2001 – as part of the definitive NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts (NIAC) study. At the NIAC conclusion, Laine used the accumulated knowledge to form LiftPort Group to push forward the concept and construct an Elevator on the Moon. Laine is President of LiftPort Group – the commercial effort to build the Lunar Space Elevator. LiftPort Group is an “idea factory” focused on commercializing the spin-off technologies developed in pursuit of the Lunar Space Elevator Infrastructure.
